All That Glitter Is Not Gold (The Great Pretender)

Poet who fancies

He has the Midas touch,
Easy on that gilded dressing—

You want your head stuffed
And spinning, grinning on

A silver platter?

  1. Recalling the ancient Hollies tune "King Midas in Reverse".

Once knew a poet whose all-time best, most honest and most memorable lines went approximately as follows:

"Every time I find something beautiful
    I fuck it up
and then I bring it to you."

(Well, the lines were ALMOST that good.)

And speaking of ancient tunes... "The Great Pretender"!

(Where do we draw the line between leaden oldie and bronze oldie?)

  2. That poet's lines--were they ever used as lyrics for a song? Probably not and certainly not during the 50s when I was cutting my teeth on the likes of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino--may their kind of now ancient music live forever!
