To be beautifully lost
For a time takes as long
As one finds time
Enough to give in
To such frivolous fancy,
And for me that’s poetry—
But the shine on the pendulum says
Your time’s up, Mister, so take that
Crock of shit back to where you found it.

Vassilis,
ReplyDeletelove the always unorthodox, slightly irreverent and always deliciously paradoxical 'gnome' in you...
Niedecker (to me) is another of those "beautifully lost" because screwed over by the 'boys' (the Objectivists in general, Zukofsky in particular)But don't get me started.
Lost Poet's Alibi
ReplyDelete"Any time my crock of goat's milk looks like coming up empty,
you can find me back here in the condensery."
Thanks, Conrad—this gnome is ευγνώμων(evgnomon)=thankful you should think so and you’re right about Lorine being somewhat appropriated by the Men in Objectivism but she was fortunate in having Cid Corman championing her work and featuring it in Origin.
ReplyDeleteTom,
One of Lorine’s finest and your presentation of it next to Vachon’s photography is brilliant; by the way, did you know that asses’ milk is far superior to any other kind except woman’s? BUT “Unfortunately, it is frowned upon [by the asses] in the average American society. . . .It is also said that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in asses’ milk to preserve the beauty and youth of her skin. Legend has it that no less than 700 asses were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath.” (Wikipedia) Hmm……there must be a poem in there somewhere.
I hadn't known that, and now find I can't expel the fact from my mind.
ReplyDeleteHad those asses only been human the production would have probably been regarded as an honour.

Ed,
ReplyDeleteThe pics of Lorine I'd seen before but another look was in store--and you're right, the juxtapositioning of the poems in Solitary Plover is, as we used to say, "nifty". Thanks!
