On I-90 in Big Sky Country, 1976

A below zero morning somewhere between
Bozeman and Billings, a small blue-colored bird
On a wire fence with the road ice keeping us moving along
Slow enough to see its breath another cumulus cloud forming.

  1. Dreamy! And I've been there. When I was in grad school ('74-'76) my route between Denver and Vancouver BC took me through Billings, Bozeman, Butte, Missoula, Spokane, etc. Big Sky indeed!

  2. Thanks, Joe--you were going west then, my young man while yours truly was eastward bound after spending 75-76 working as a night reception desk clerk at the Morrison Hotel in Seattle--wonder if our cars passed going in opposite directions? Nice to think so.

  3. V,

That wide, frigid swatch of outer space became familiar back in the mid-to-late 70s, vividly recalled by this poem.

Caused the ancient mind to drift back to such scenes as those on view in pix #4, 7, 11, 14, 17 here.

  4. That was quite a trip you and Ed went on and your poet's eye mined jewels out of the landscape.
