As it was many years ago, seeing
The couple that seemed old
To us then, wondering what it was
He was saying as they walked
Arm in arm round the Parthenon,
When he squeezed her hand
And she answered yes dear,
Clearly it must have been
A day much like this one.
the best reply: "Yes Dear"
ReplyDeletethe worst reply: (silence).
Ed,
ReplyDeleteYou're right, of course, but when someone's left speechless by the sight of Athena's temple, silence is the only thing you want to hear.
Ah, the passage of time, what a joy. How would it be if we were able to live forever? To me ghastly.
ReplyDeleteWith tongue (invisible) in cheek, I would reply "To me ghostly!" :0)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful poem.
ReplyDeleteAs to the question of eternal life, having just been brushed by the dark wing of mortality, a bit too unnervingly close for comfort, I'd say -- colour me bright and immortal any time, oh goddess!
Death may indeed be the mother of beauty, but poor orphan life (animula blandula, vagula) forgot its good looks long ago anyway, Mother.
Thank you, Tom for the comment and for reminding us just how close we are.
