Throwback

I thought once I returned
To the motherland, I’d remember
Things I’d long forgotten—

How silly to think one could
Go back and fetch memories
As if they were sticks

To be retrieved and you
A mere puppy playing
At being a man.

  1. Oh, I like this. Yes, I think that's just right--as if you are a pup, playing at being a man.

  2. Magnificent! How you pack so much wisdom into so few bittersweet lines....

  3. Wonderful poem! And the title adds a lot too, not only the pun but so much else. I heartily agree with both of the previous comments, this one is superb.

  4. Many thanks, friends, for the warm comments--just what this puppy needed.

  5. Left myself a note to comment on this at the time but it got buried in a pile of other stuff and I've just run across it. Nothing to say that's not already been said by those who made more timely responses but I still wanted to record my appreciation. I appreciate its quiet profundity.

  6. Jim,

I don't think there's a shelf life on voicing your appreciation about creative commodities! Thanks for "belatedly" telling me this one touched a nerve.
